Genesis Electrified G80 sedan to exit U.S. market after 2025

Genesis will stop sales of the Electrified G80 in the U.S. after the 2025 model year.

A spokesperson for the brand confirmed that the electric counterpart to Genesis’ midsize sedan was freshened for the 2026 model year for sale in “global markets,” but it will no longer be offered stateside.

“The decision to no longer offer the Electrified G80 in the U.S. was made to better reflect the needs of our customers,” he said.

The Electrified G80 went on sale in 2022 and is the lowest-selling model in Genesis’ lineup. Through the first six months of the year, U.S. sales of the large electric sedan declined 45 percent to 77 versus the prior year. In July, dealers logged just 10 sales.

Crossovers are Genesis’ bread and butter, which aligns with American consumers’ preference for the higher riding body style.

While the entry G70 sport sedan continues to do well in the U.S., combined year-to-date sales of the midsize G80 and large G90 reached 3,213, less than the combined GV80 and GV70 sales of 5,037 in July.

The Electrified G80 is one of two electric vehicles in Genesis’ lineup that rides on a multipowertrain platform, rather than Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP platform. The other is the U.S.-assembled Electrified GV70.

The Electrified G80 is imported from Hyundai’s factory in Ulsan, South Korea.

Tariffs and the loss of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit could be part of the reason Genesis is halting sales of the electric sedan in the U.S., according to Stephanie Brinley, associate director of auto intelligence at S&P Global Mobility.

“The reality is we’re still looking at a tariff situation, and if that car isn’t being sold in as many volumes and you need to simplify what you’re shipping over, then it’s easy to put on pause,” Brinley said.

While the Electrified G80 wasn’t eligible for a sales tax credit, buyers could recoup the incentive through a lease, and luxury vehicles tend to have a higher leasing rate.

“The market dynamics and the trade flow dynamics are really complex right now,” Brinley said, noting that if Genesis holds off for 2026, it can decide to bring back the Electrified G80 depending on how everything shakes out.
