
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated that 6,129 first-time unemployment claims were filed in Florida last week, down from a revised count of 6,347 during the week that ended July 26. The department initially estimated 4,928 unemployment applications were submitted during the week that ended July 26, which would have been the lowest weekly total this year. With the new numbers, Florida has averaged 6,536 claims over the past four weeks. Nationally, an estimated 226,000 claims were filed last week, up from 219,000 during the week that ended July 26. The national numbers are seasonally adjusted, while the state numbers are not adjusted. The national jobless rate in July was 4.2 percent. Florida had a 3.7 percent unemployment rate in April, May, and June. The Florida Department of Commerce will release a July rate on Aug. 15.
