Asher Watkins, a millionaire rancher from Texas, had his life cut short after falling victim to a buffalo attack. Before his demise, the rancher, also a trophy hunter, had traveled to South Africa for a hunting trip. During the trip, he had been stalking a massive buffalo. Unfortunately, the buffalo noticed his presence and charged at him, resulting in Watkins’ death.
Watkins was the owner of Watkins Ranch Group, a real estate firm focusing on selling ranches, land, and recreational properties. Moreover, the company’s members possess skills in various areas related to the natural world. These include wildlife management, wetland development, land reclamation, and natural resource exploration.
What happened to millionaire Texas rancher?
A buffalo killed millionaire Texas rancher Asher Watkins during his trip to South Africa. He was 52 years old at the time of his death.
On Sunday, August 3, 2025, during his trip, Watkins was at the 50,000-acre Bambisana concession. He was tracking down the Black Death, a Cape buffalo bull weighing 1.3 tonnes. The buffalo bull soon became agitated and charged at Watkins at 35 mph. It then slammed into him and killed him instantly.
Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, which organized Watkins’ hunting trip, confirmed his demise via a statement to Metro UK. In the statement, they confirmed that the buffalo wasn’t wounded:
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA,” the statement read. “On Sunday while on a hunting safari with us in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured, in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.”
It continues, “He was tracking it together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers. This is a devastating incident and our hearts go out to his loved ones.”
“We are doing everything we can to support the family members who are here with us and those back in the United States as they navigate this tragic loss,” it concluded.
At the time of his demise, Asher’s mother, Gwen, stepfather Tony, and brother Amon were waiting for him at the lodge.
Watkins’ ex-wife, Courtney, posted an emotional tribute to him on Facebook, but later deleted it. The tribute included a picture of the former couple and their daughter, Savannah.
“It’s a reality that’s still hard to put into words. Our hearts are heavy as we navigate the days ahead, especially for his daughter as she grieves her dad,” Courtney wrote (via People). “We’ve been in a state of shock and heartbreak ever since, trying to process not just the loss, but the complexity that comes with it.”
