Unemployment rates rise across Missouri in June: Report

MISSOURI – Many parts of the country are experiencing an increase in unemployment, which includes all eight of Missouri’s metropolitan areas.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a new report outlining metropolitan areas unemployment rates compared from June 2024 to June 2025, not seasonally adjusted. That data that revealed that every metropolitan area in Missouri saw unemployment rates rise over the time frame.

  • St. Louis: 4% to 4.1%

  • Columbia: 3.7% to 4.2%

  • Jefferson City: 3.5% to 3.7%

  • Cape Girardeau: 4% to 4.3%

  • Joplin: 4% to 4.4%

  • Kansas City: 3.8% to 4.2%

  • St. Joseph: 4.2% to 4.5%

  • Springfield: 3.7% to 4.2%

These numbers contribute in the jump from 124,766 Missourians unemployed in June 2024 to 140,946 in June 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Columbia and Springfield saw the highest increases, with both unemployment rates rising 0.5% compared from the year prior. Meanwhile, St. Louis saw the smallest increase, rising 0.1%.

Despite increased unemployment rates across the state, all but St. Joseph have remained either at or below the 4.4% national unemployment rate.
