While taxpayers likely won't get stimulus checks this month, new legislation has been introduced to distribute rebate checks from surplus tariff revenue.
President Donald Trump told reporters July 25 he is considering such rebates for Americans. "We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate," he said.
Following this, a legislator introduced a bill dubbed the American Worker Rebate Act on July 28.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said July 11 tariffs in place at that time had already raised $100 billion, USA TODAY reported. The administration has since announced new tariffs on a range of goods and countries
However, it's worth noting the Trump administration's tariffs could end up costing American households an average of $2,400 this year, according to a July 28 report from The Budget Lab at Yale.

What is the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025?
Days after Trump expressed interest in a potential rebate check, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., introduced legislation to make it a reality.
The American Worker Rebate Act of 2025 would provide at least $600 to tax-paying adults and dependent children, or $2,400 for a family of four, according to a July 28 press release from Hawley's office.
It would be reduced by 5% for joint filers with an adjusted gross income above $150,000 or single filers earning more than $75,000 individually. It also allows for a larger rebate if the tariff-generated revenue exceeds projections.
The terms of the 14-page bill would be similar to the 2020 stimulus checks issued at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the release said.
