VALPARAISO, Ind. — A Porter County man has been ordered to pay more than $120,000 in restitution for his role in a scheme to defraud the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

According to prosecutors, the scheme unfolded while Jones was working at an environmental consulting company in Chesterton, Indiana.

Jones and the company had been hired by gas station owners to manage and perform remediation work related to underground storage tank leaks and in order to help reimburse the remediation costs, the State of Indiana created a state trust fund, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

But prosecutors said Jones wenbt on to submit false and fraudulent applications for reimbursement of costs that were not actually incurred, reaping the benefit of state funds he was not entitled to.

“Alan Jones participated in a scheme to fraudulently obtain public money from the State of Indiana,” Proctor said. “This district is committed to prosecuting those who defraud government programs. I want to thank the combined team of state and federal law enforcement professionals for the thorough investigation that supported this prosecution.”

On Wednesday, United States District Court Judge James Moody handed down the sentence.

Jones had previously pleaded guilty to a federal felony for mail fraud.

It is unclear when the scheme unfolded and prosecutors did not provide a booking photo for Jones.
