Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) accused a reporter of being a “raging Democrat” following a town hall event for her gubernatorial race Thursday, after being asked about her vote against the Inflation Reduction Act passed under former President Biden.
Mace at the event touted the construction of a new highway interchange for South Carolinians during her stint in Washington. A reporter noted she voted against funding for such projects by opposing Biden’s legislative agenda.
Mace spent about 2 minutes defending her vote against the IRA, which she said included too much wasteful spending and not enough investment in infrastructure.
“I voted against almost every spending bill I’ve ever had before me because of the wasteful spending,” she told the reporter, whose identity is unclear in a video of the event.
Mace then turned what had been a fairly civil exchange into a series of personal attacks on the journalist.
“You’re very confused. And you’re a raging Democrat, so raging leftist with that kind of questioning,” Mace told the reporter.
“And I would say as a woman, like, you might want to think about how you view other women and how you treat other women the way that you question them, because women are going to lead this country off the brink.”
The journalist had repeatedly asked Mace about the practice of touting a bill’s success as an accomplishment after attempting to block its passage.
“Once the appropriations happen, I’m going to make sure that South Carolina, that we get our fair share,” Mace said at one point.
As of late July, Mace was polling as the front-runner in a hypothetical GOP primary in the governor’s race. She’s running in a crowded field of Republicans, including state Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Rep. Ralph Norman (S.C.) and state Sen. Josh Kimbrell.
Mace openly called for President Trump’s endorsement at the Thursday night event.
“I’m just saying, I’ve done a lot for the president,” Mace said. “If you talk to him, I would really like his support for governor.”
