ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish issued a reminder to leave wild animals alone after a fawn was found inside a home in Roswell.

NMDGF officers responded to the home on July 28 after law enforcement reported that they found a fawn inside the bathtub of a home.

The fawn was brought to the Desert Willow Wildlife Rehabilitation because it became accustomed to people and needed further care, according to a spokesperson for NMDGF

KRQE News 13 asked NMDGF if it knew how long the fawn was in the home and if anyone was cited or charged in the incident. A spokesperson said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

As for the fawn’s future, NMDGF said staff at Desert Willow Wildlife Rehabilitation will continue to evaluate the fawn’s progress to determine next steps.

KRQE News 13 learned the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police had responded to the home where the fawn was found. NMSP confirmed they assisted the sheriff’s office and told KRQE to reach out to Chaves County and NMDGF for more information.

In response to KRQE’s initial inquiry, NMDGF also sent the following guidelines on what to do when encountering young wildlife:

  • Do not approach. Leave the area quickly and quietly.

  • Observe the animal from a safe distance, but don’t linger in the area or touch the animal.

  • If you think the animal has been abandoned, mark the location using a GPS if possible and contact the nearest Department of Game and Fish office. Offices are located in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Raton, Las Cruces and Roswell.

Keeping wild animals as pets is illegal, and it is very difficult to return young wild animals to their natural environments after they have been in close contact with humans, the NMDGF spokesperson said.
