GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down in Deckerville, Michigan Saturday, bringing the statewide total for the year to 30.

The EF1 tornado in Deckerville touched down at 4:18 p.m. Saturday and was on the ground for 1.6 miles, the survey reports. Maximum winds were estimated at 95 mph, with damage to farm fields and barns primarily. No injuries or fatalities occurred, although a few vehicles were reportedly moved by the tornado.

The Deckerville tornado touched down without a tornado warning from the National Weather Service. Deckerville is about 70 miles from the closest radar site, and the shallow-topped storm structure made rotation impossible to detect without an improved national radar network.

Michigan received twice as many tornadoes as usual in 2025

This is the 30th tornado to touch down in the state of Michigan in 2025 so far, which is more than double the usual average for the entire year. This included several tornadoes on March 30 and several more that touched down with a powerful line of storms on May 15.

Nationally, the number of tornadoes has also been high. Usually, the nation sees around 1,100 tornado reports by this point in the year, but tornadoes have exceeded the average nationally since early March.

Tornadoes can touch down in any month of the year in Michigan. Typically, an average of three tornadoes touch down somewhere in the state in August, with tornado chances dropping off substantially in November.
