KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s National Farmers Market Week, and markets all across the metro spent the weekend celebrating.
One of the spots that saw the most traction this week was the famous City Market, located near the riverfront and widely known as one of the largest farmers’ markets in the area.

The market was open all weekend long, featuring produce from local farms and goods from small businesses. And thankfully, as the rain fell Sunday morning, visitors and shop owners were able to continue their shopping endeavors under the covered pavilions.
Shoppers were able to purchase fresh and homegrown summer produce, such as corn, potatoes, herbs, peppers and watermelon, from vendors like River’s Edge Produce — a local farm from Platte City that has had a booth at the market for the last 11 years.
“It’s a great time to celebrate local food and appreciate the small harbor, and it’s just so important to support local economies right now and support your small local farmer,” market manager Paula Stocker said. “They need our help, and it’s the best food you’re gonna get anywhere.”

National Farmers Market Week is a time to honor all of our local growers, and to make things even more exciting for the vendors, the City Market is in the running for a $15,000 prize from the American Farmland Trust.
