MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — One longtime Middle Tennessee food bank fears that a lack of federal funding could cause them to close their doors.

The Executive Director of Nourish Food Bank, Norman Hanks, said the clock is already ticking.

“If nothing came in at this point, we would have six weeks to keep our doors open,” Hanks said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there’s been a significant rise in food prices. In June, they were up 3% from the same time in 2024.

Nourish Food Bank serves 3,500 people a month. It takes $41,000 monthly to maintain their Nashville, Smyrna-La Vergne and Murfreesboro locations. Hanks believes as food insecurity grows, so will the pressure it takes to feed more people.

“They have two kids, three kids, two incomes and still cannot afford to feed their families,” Hanks said. “It’s not because they want to [and] it’s not because they’re not trying to, it is simply because they can’t; the price of groceries is so high right now that it’s hard to pay.”
