
President Trump announced Monday that he will invoke a takeover of the Washington, D.C., police department and activate the National Guard in the nation’s capital as the District of Columbia’s crime and appearance has becomes one of his targets.
Late last week, the president ordered federal law enforcement deployed at night to prevent violent crime in parts of the city, and Monday morning he will make remarks on how he plans to move forward with improving safety and addressing homelessness.
Trump is delivering a press conference at the White House.
The week will also be spent preparing for a Friday summit in Alaska between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The administration is hoping for a breakthrough in peace negotiations with Moscow and a discussion around territorial acquisitions. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukraine will not cede territory to Russia.
