Few cars can mesh top-level opulence with speed quite like Bentley. The British automaker's hand-built flagships leave nothing to be desired, and the 2010-generation Bentley Mulsanne was referred to as "The Grand Bentley" for a reason. If you wanted your grandeur with a side of ludicrous speed, the aptly named Bentley Mulsanne Speed was released in 2014. The Mulsanne was as curvy and limousine-like as one could get at the time. With a rather interesting quad headlight arrangement and upward-sweeping taillights, it stood out as a unique offering in Bentley's lineup. Under the hood was a turbocharged 6¾-liter V8 engine mated to an 8-speed ZF 8HP automatic transmission. As one would expect from a hand-built creation of this nature, the standard features list was extensive and included 20-inch wheels, air suspension, soft-close doors and trunk, keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, parking sensors, four-zone automatic climate control, heated 14-way power-adjustable front seats, eight-way adjustable rear seats, power rear-window privacy glass, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 14-speaker stereo.

The Bentley Mulsanne Speed took an already perfect formula and did the unthinkable

The Speed variant took all of those features and somehow managed to create an even more impressive package. The 6¾-liter V8 engine now made 530 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque, compared to the standard Mulsanne's 505 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque. Its 0-60 mph time also decreased to 4.8 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds faster than the standard Mulsanne, while the top speed increased to 190 mph from 184 mph.

Fuel efficiency was also increased by 13%, an ironic addition in a performance-focused variant, thanks to a redesigned combustion system. Other Speed-exclusive features included a Sports suspension mode, a dark tint for the stainless steel grille, different headlights, a more unique taillight design that Bentley called a "floating ellipse," and a twin exhaust. New colored stitch lines took over the cabin's look, while a 60 GB onboard hard drive, electrically-operated tables with recesses and connections for iPads, and a Wi-Fi hotspot rounded out the technological additions.

This particular 2016 Bentley Mulsanne Speed is finished in a rather sleek and elite-looking shade of Volcanic Black over a matching dark Beluga leather interior with ample rich wood veneer and polished chrome carefully placed throughout. Apart from benefiting from the desirable Speed package, this hand-built beauty also sports the "Naim for Bentley" premium audio system, as well as the "Hidden Delights by Mulliner" package, which finished certain surfaces in a customer-chosen color, in this case a shade of red called "Hotspur."

Final thoughts

Putting aside the rather uninspiring color on this example, owning a Bentley Mulsanne Speed puts you in a higher tier of automotive enthusiasm. Not only are you driving around the vehicular equivalent of Buckingham Palace, but you're doing so while being able to hit 190 mph at will. With less than 14,000 miles on the odometer, the $110,000 asking price seems like a relative bargain considering its original MSRP of $300,000+. Just thinking of that 6¾-liter V8 engine roaring while sitting in that heated seat makes me drool.
