The extreme heat warning issued by the National Weather Service for northwest Oregon has been extended into Aug. 12 due to temperatures that will continue to threaten 100 degrees.

Temperatures were forecast to range from 97 to 105 degrees across much of northwest Oregon Aug. 11 and 12, including in the Willamette Valley, forecasters said. Nighttime temperatures were not expected to provide much relief with lows staying in the upper 60s or 70s.

Previously, the heat warning was set to expire on Aug. 11, but temperatures are forecast to stay near 100 degrees through Aug. 12 as well.

"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events," NWS Portland said in the alert. The extreme heat warning expires at 10 p.m. on Aug. 12.

Temperatures should cool across the rest of the week and rain is even forecast by the weekend.

If the forecast holds, much of northwest Oregon would see three days straight of temperatures above 100 degrees. That would be short of last year's record of five straight days above 100 degrees.

How to stay cool during Oregon heat wave

To stay safe during the heat wave, the federal agency suggested:

  • Drink plenty of fluids.

  • Stay in a cool place during the heat of the day.

  • Stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

  • For those without air conditioning, use fans to keep air moving.

  • Keep windows closed during the day and open at night.

  • Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
