LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The most recent report from the Arkansas Department of Human Services shows that in 2023, they conducted more than 34,000 child maltreatment assessments.
DHS reports 23% of the cases showed credible evidence that during the summer months, children found themselves isolated and victims of abuse.
Denis Dean, the chief deputy prosecuting attorney for Washington and Madison counties, says it’s important to look for signs of abuse and report it as soon as possible.
“If you suspect that this is happening, a mandated reporter is required to call the Arkansas State Police Child Abuse Hotline. A parent or trusted adult can do the exact same thing. They can also go to their local police department, and they can also go to DHS,” Dean said.
Dean says if you do see something, say something. He says to state the facts and avoid embellishment, which is needed to start an investigation. All reporting remains confidential.
