When will the heat break? Severe weather, extreme heat possible in Iowa today

Iowa is seeing some extreme temperatures and possible severe weather during the last week of July.

Temperatures are forecast to surpass 100 degrees on Monday, July 28, and Tuesday, July 29, in Iowa, making heat illness a possibility for those who spend time outside.

Severe weather could creep into Iowa from Monday evening to Tuesday morning after a wave of storms knocked power out for thousands early on Monday morning.

How hot will the Des Moines metro get?

By noon, Des Moines could see the heat index reach 106 degrees, before reaching a high of 110 degrees by 6 p.m. Temperatures will start to drop in the evening, but the heat index will remain around 98 degrees at 9 p.m.

On Tuesday, July 29, the heat index will remain in the 100s but not as high. At noon it could be 103 degrees with a high of 106 degrees by 3 p.m. The heat index should drop to 92 degrees by 9 p.m.

Where are the heat warnings and advisories in Iowa?

An extreme heat warning covers much of state with a heat advisory covering parts of north central and northeast Iowa.

Carroll and Ames will see the highest heat index by 3 p.m. July 28, at 110 degrees and 111 degrees, respectively. Des Moines will see similar temperatures, with peaks later in the evening.

What other severe weather is possible in Iowa?

Aside from unbearable heat, Iowans could also see some severe weather sweep the state in the evening on July 28 and into the morning.

Storms will begin in South Dakota or Minnesota in the afternoon and move east toward Iowa. Damaging winds are the main concern, according to the National Weather Service. Northwestern Iowa has the greatest likelihood of damaging winds ranging from 60 to 80 mph. There is also a chance for large hail.

The Des Moines metro could see some damaging winds, but is only under a marginal (level 1 out of 5) risk, according to the National Weather Service.
