Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love will undergo surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left thumb, general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Tuesday.

Love suffered the injury to his non-throwing hand after hitting a helmet during Sunday's 30-10 preseason loss to the New York Jets. He was seen wearing tape around the thumb at Monday's practice.

Gutekunst added that he expects Love to return to practice next week and he should be fine for the start of the regular season.

“He’ll be ready for Week 1 and that’s the most important thing," Gutekunst said.

When Love returns to practice, the team will assess him day-by-day and decide whether he'll see any action in the Packers' preseason finale on Aug. 23 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Love missed two games last season after suffering an MCL sprain during the season opener in Brazil against the Philadelphia Eagles. He also dealt with groin and elbow injuries later in the season.
