Severe thunderstorms brought damaging winds, large hail and torrential rain to Minnesota on Sunday, with the Twin Cities among the areas in the firing line.

More than 38,000 households in the Twin Cities area were still without power as of 7 a.m. Monday, with strong winds bringing down trees and power lines in parts of the metro.

Heavy, fast-falling rain also sparked flash flooding warnings in St. Paul, with the latest rain totals update showing more than 2.5 inches fell in the city.

Things could get worse on Monday too, as a possible derecho bringing prolonged heavy rain and 100 mph winds expected to make its way through Minnesota.

The highest rain level recorded so far is more than 6.5 inches in Chokio in west-central Minnesota, with nearby Morris also receiving more than 5 inches.
