GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan State Police have released new video of Saturday’s tornado that touched down in Sanilac County.
MSP says Lt. Doug Confer of the Deckerville Fire Department got video of the EF1 tornado, showing it cut across a farm. Another clip from an MSP helicopter shows the path that the storm cut across a field.
Tornado confirmed Sunday becomes Michigan’s 30th of the year
The National Weather Service reports the tornado touched down in Deckerville at 4:18 p.m. and was on the ground for 1.6 miles. At its zenith, the storm was 100 yards wide, and winds touched 100 miles per hour.
Nobody was hurt by the tornado, but some barns and a few vehicles were damaged. The NWS survey noted that the top of a pine tree was torn off and impaled a nearby semi.
Saturday’s twister is the 30th confirmed tornado of the year in Michigan, already double the usual average for the entire year. A bulk of those tornadoes spun up in storms on March 30 and May 15.
The number of tornadoes has also been high nationwide. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows the U.S. would have seen approximately 1,100 tornadoes by the end of July. As of Saturday, NOAA has recorded 1,379 tornadoes this year.
