Koenigsegg’s 1,500-hp Regera and lighter Agera RS face off in a quarter-mile drag race showcasing two extreme performance philosophies.

Two of Sweden’s most extreme hypercars — the Koenigsegg Agera RS and the Koenigsegg Regera — recently went head-to-head in a quarter-mile drag race, pitting raw mechanical performance against cutting-edge hybrid technology.

The Regera, unveiled in 2015 as Koenigsegg’s hybrid grand tourer, pairs a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with three electric motors. Running on E85 race fuel, the combined output reaches 1,500 horsepower and 2,000 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through Koenigsegg’s unique single-speed “Direct Drive” transmission, designed to maximize top speed while electric motors provide instant low-speed acceleration. Weighing in at 1,590 kilograms, the Regera blends sheer performance with a focus on long-distance capability.

Facing it was the Agera RS, a lighter and more traditional hypercar that held the title of the world’s fastest production car in 2017. It shares the same 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 but omits any hybrid assistance, producing 1,360 horsepower and 1,570 Nm of torque. Weighing just 1,395 kilograms and equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the Agera RS relies on its lower mass and conventional gearing to deliver explosive acceleration.

Both cars are valued at around £3 million, making the matchup as much a contest of engineering philosophies as outright speed. The Regera represents Koenigsegg’s innovative hybrid approach, while the Agera RS channels the brand’s traditional lightweight, high-revving performance ethos.

The race served as an opportunity to see whether the Regera’s massive hybrid power advantage could overcome the Agera RS’s weight savings and mechanical simplicity. The result was a testament to just how close performance can be at the top tier of automotive engineering — and a reminder of why Koenigsegg remains a leader in the hypercar world.
