
BRONX, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A new exhibit at the Bronx Zoo will take you into a world of darkness.
You’ll have to let your eyes adjust when you first walk in. The nocturnal animals come out during the day because all the lights are off inside the exhibition hall. Destination New York’s Greg Mocker takes us to the zoo.
We took the day off and headed out, it has been a while since there’s something new to explore at Bronx zoo. It’s a great place for the community. The staff is ready to welcome you this summer to a new exhibit. People gathered for a ceremonial ribbon cutting outside the building.

Keith Lovett is the Bronx Zoo’s director of animal programs. Day turns to night when you step inside the world of darkness. So you wanna let your eyes adjust. It’s the reverse when people come to the zoo during the day it’s dark in here and then vice versa. At night, we turn on the lights.
The bats are busy. Press the button and learn about echo location. That’s how they move and hunt. The Vampire bats are hanging out. When you’re inside the exhibit, the scenes takes some getting used to. Look closely. There goes an armadillo. The nighttime is dinner time.
25 species are on the move in 21 habitats The dark exhibit originally opened in 1969. It was closed 16 years ago. The genius of the building is it simplicity. we turn day into night.
Stand up Back outside and into the light. The building is a landmark at the zoo. It was built in 1956. This is the first new permanent exhibit in 16 years. At the Bronx Zoo, I’m Greg Mocker.
