The hottest day for 2023 was also on Aug. 25 with 100 degrees, and the last time the metro has seen triple digits. It was also the hottest day in Kansas City in 11 years, going back to Aug. 7, 2012.

The last historic heatwave for the Kansas City metro started on Aug. 19, 2023. The combination of the extreme heat and the excessively high dewpoints caused heat indices from Aug. 19 through Aug. 25 to rise to 120-130 degrees.

Recorded data for heat index at the airport dates back to the 1880s. The hottest heat index in the area occurred in Lawrence, Kansas on Aug. 20 and 21, 2023, when it rose to 134 degrees.
