Last season, 10 boaters died in incidents. The most common type of incidents then were collision with vessels or capsizing.

Those types of incidents exemplify the importance of wearing a life jacket. In PA, all boats must have a serviceable United States Coast Guard-approved life jacket on board for each person.

Additionally, children 12 years old and younger must wear a life jacket in all canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and boats 20 feet or less.

A summer of storms meant higher water levels and rougher currents in creeks and rivers. In June, the commission issued a warning that many parts of the state were not safe for beginners.

During Independence Day, waterways conservation officers participated in Operation Dry Water to enforce boating safety rules, the commission said. The operation resulted in nine BUI arrests, 284 general boating citations and 931 warnings.

The holiday was a busy day for rescuers in the Midstate, too. Responders pulled at least 14 people from Swatara Creek on Independence Day in Derry Township.

“Because many rivers and streams have been running high due to rainy conditions during the early summer, even more people will be flocking to our waterways every chance they get as more favorable conditions present themselves,” said Daniel Pastore, president of the commission. “Remember, there is more than enough room for everyone on the water, so please continue to be courteous to others, be mindful of our aquatic resources and if you’re boating, always wear your life jacket.”
