Infiniti Explores Diversification

The full-size luxury SUV space is highly competitive, and the Infiniti QX80 is proof, with sales in the United States varying above and below the five-figure mark over the last five years. But Infiniti is taking action. After releasing the new QX80 Sport for 2026 last week with additional luxury features like available third-row heating for the first time, Infiniti is now exploring what else the future might hold for the nameplate if it were to become more specialized - meet the Infiniti QX80 Track and QX80 Terrain concepts, which are making their debut at Monterey Car Week as you read this. Why do these exist? To see what you think of them, of course, and if it would be a viable exercise to turn them into trims or add-ons for the production QX80.

There's probably already a little voice in your head saying that SUVs don't belong on the track, and even the best of them (Urus, Purosangue, DBX) are never taken there by their owners. But let's shelve the cynicism - this concept still looks like loads of fun. The 3.5-liter V6's twin turbos have been revised, and the result is more than 650 horsepower and over 750 lb-ft of torque - increases of roughly 50% on the base numbers. The exciting part is that Infiniti says this was achieved without opening the engine itself, only installing bigger compressors on the turbo, larger injectors, a bigger intercooler, a ram air intake, and a freer-flowing exhaust. These are all parts that could potentially be installed at a dealer. To rein in the extra performance, larger Brembo brakes have been fitted. Also potentially a bolt-on upgrade, if enough customers clamor for it...

While most trailhunters tend to opt for something a little more utilitarian, the idea of a luxury off-roader appeals to everyone - even BMW is reportedly working on a G-Class rival. The QX80 Terrain Spec gets a lifted suspension, all-terrain tires wrapped around off-road wheels, and fender flares. On top of the imposing SUV is a lightbar and a pop-up tent, both protected by a sleek cover, while limb risers aim to keep branches away from the windshield (although these are typically used on vehicles with flat windscreens). Infiniti has also thought of what might lie just ahead, giving this concept Invisible Hood View tech to stitch together a look at the trail just ahead and under the SUV. Finally, a surround-view monitor helps one see how close the vehicle is to the trail edges and other hazards.

Promisingly, Infiniti says that these two concepts provide a "preview of the next new vehicle in Infiniti's product renaissance." These design studies have different philosophies, but we assume with words like those that we'll see which will lend its ideas to a production vehicle sometime soon. Next year, perhaps.
