With unbearable heat, dreams of cool fall days and sweater weather might be haunting your dreams. But the first day of fall is still months away.

Much of Tennessee is under a heat dome that has brought triple-digit temperatures to communities and an even higher heat index. And this heat wave isn't expected to lift until the end of July, according to meteorologists. So, a taste of fall isn't in the cards anytime soon...unless you grab a pumpkin spice latte in August.

Here's a look at when the first day of fall is and when it could potentially get cooler.

When is the first day of fall?

The first day of fall is Sept. 22, at 1:19 p.m. CT/ 2:19 p.m. ET, also known as the autumnal equinox.

The equinox is known as the astronomical start of the season, but there is another method used to measure the change in seasons.

The meteorological start to fall is based on the annual temperature cycle and the 12-month calendar. With this definition, each season begins on the first of a particular month and lasts for three months. This means summer will end on Aug. 31 and fall will start on Sept. 1, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The South is predicted to have an average temperature of 78 degrees in September, which is about 3 degrees above normal, and 4 inches of rain, about an inch below normal.

October is predicted to have an average temperature of 64 degrees, one degree below normal, and 1.5 inches of rain, 1.5 inches below normal.
