A 14-year-old boy was killed and a girl under the age of 16 was injured in a shooting early Sunday in a south Kansas City parking lot, a police spokesperson said.

Police later identified the boy as Teandre Gibson.

Officers responded to reports of shots being fired shortly after 12:15 a.m. in the 1700 block of East 97th Street in the Linden Hills and Indian Heights neighborhood of Kansas City.

There, a bystander waved down police and told them that several people were involved in an altercation that led to gunfire in a nearby parking lot, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.

Those involved in the altercation fled before police arrived, Gonzalez said.

As officers investigated the shooting, a hospital notified them that Teandre and the girl had been taken there. Teandre later died from his injuries. The girl sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Gonzalez said.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the area, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Police did not have any preliminary information on what led up to the shooting, Gonzalez said. Police also have not taken anyone into custody. No suspect information was available.

The killing is Kansas City’s 102nd homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 97 homicides reported by this time last year.

Detectives urged anyone with any information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8744). Information submitted anonymously to the hotline can earn a reward of up to $25,000.

Witnesses can also contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043.
