Bryan Kohberger may have known at least one of his victims.
Though investigators have claimed they found no link between Kohberger and the Idaho Four, an eyewitness heard him call Kaylee Goncalves by name before brutally stabbing her to death.
According to newly unsealed court documents obtained by People, Dylan Mortensen, one of two roommates who survived the vicious slayings, told the Idaho State Police that she woke up and opened her door in the early hours of November 13, 2022, “and heard a male say, ‘It’s okay Kaylee, I’m here for you,’ and crying.”
Kaylee’s father, Steve Goncalves, has said that his daughter believed she was being “hunted” by a stalker in the months leading up to her death.
“The only thing more disturbing than the murder of your child is hearing that the killer called out her name while committing this heinous act — and then discovering the prosecutor deliberately hid this fact from the families,” he told TMZ after learning of the documents.
In July, Kohberger confessed to murdering Kaylee, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20 and Madison Mogen, 21, and pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. However, he refused to reveal his motive for the killings.
At Kohberger’s sentencing hearing, Mortensen — the only eyewitness to have seen the killer that night — delivered an emotional impact statement to the court. “He is a hollow vessel. Something less than human. A body without empathy or remorse,” she said. “He chose destruction, he chose evil. He feels nothing. He tried to take everything from me.”
Kohberger is currently serving four consecutive life sentences at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution.
