Legendary Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro is in the hospital after rolling his Land Rover Defender. The incident took place in Abbiadori, an exclusive enclave on the Italian island of Sardinia as the 87-year-old was driving through the area.

Suspect steals fire engine, damages 16 cars during joyride.

According to local news outlet L’Unione Sarda, Giugiaro was going through a hairpin turn in his Land Rover Defender when he lost control of the SUV. It left the road, rolling down an embankment before coming to a rest on its side on the road below.

Because of the extent of his injuries, Giugiaro was airlifted to a hospital. However, the fear he was critical was dispelled at the hospital, so he should survive the ordeal.

According to Quattroruote.it, Giugiaro suffered injuries to his face, legs, and spine. He was expected to be discharged from the hospital after a 48 hour stay, his son saying he’s going to stay with family in Turin afterward.

Starting his career at the ripe age of 17, Giugiaro got his start at Fiat. Later, he left for Bertone, then went on to Ghia.

Many have called Giugiaro the most influential car designer of the twentieth century. He not only founded Italdesign, the man had a hand in creating some of the most iconic vehicles like the original Volkswagen Golf, Fiat Panda, DeLorean DMC-12, Lotus Esprit, BMW M1, Alfa Romeo Brera, Saab 9000, Bugatti EB112, and countless concepts for Lamborghini, Ferrari, and others.

The spot where Giugiaro crashed his Defender is apparently notorious for car wrecks, so he’s hardly the first and likely not the last to suffer an accident there. He was spending the summer at his villa in the Costa Smeralda area at the time, with the accident cutting his stay short.
