U.S. News & World Report says this Indiana high school is among the best in the nation

The U.S. News & World Report released its list of best public high schools for the 2025-26 school year, and one Indiana school made the Top 10 for the best schools in the nation.

This year's rankings evaluated nearly 24,000 public high schools and ranked nearly 18,000 of them.

The ranks are determined by six indicators, which are weighted and then calculated into a 0-100 overall score for the school's performance across all metrics.

The rankings only include traditional public schools, charter schools, and magnet schools that had a 12th-grade enrollment of 15 students or greater. Private schools were not included in the list because of "limitations in publicly available data," the news release for this year's list said.

The U.S. News & World Report's rankings have come under scrutiny over the years, however, for favoring certain kinds of schools and overemphasizing standardized testing scores, which have historically favored wealthier districts.

Five of the Top 10 best high schools in Indiana are in areas where the median household income is greater than $100,000, far exceeding the state average income of $66,785, according to Census data.

The state’s second-ranked high school, the Indiana Academy in Muncie, is labeled as a “public high school” but some students pay up to $2,700 per school year for room and board fees.

All of the standardized testing scores used in measuring the schools were from the 2022-23 testing data.

Unlike last year's results, Indiana's ranking was determined by math and reading assessment data from the College Board's SAT, instead of the ILEARN exam.

The six indicators and their weights used for the rankings are:

  • College Readiness (30%) - Which was measured by the number of 12th graders from the class of 2022-23, who took and/ or earned a qualifying score on at least one Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam. The score was weighted more for those who got a qualifying score than for those who just took the exam.

  • College Curriculum Breadth (10%) - This was measured similarly to the college readiness indicator, but measures students who took multiple AP or IB exams.

  • State Assessment Proficiency (20%) - This measures how well students scored on their state's standardized tests that measure proficiency in reading, science and math.

  • State Assessment Performance (20%) - This indicator also uses state standardized testing data, but it compares those scores with what U.S. News predicted for a school with its demographic characteristics in its state.

  • Underserved student performance (10%) - This indicator is measured by assessing the state standardized test scores for Black, Hispanic and low-income students, and then comparing it to the average scores for students not in those three groups.

  • Graduation rate (10%) - This was measured by the number of students who entered the ninth grade in the 2019-20 school year and then graduated four years later in 2023.
