The German government believes the Ukraine summit in Washington was a historic meeting that successfully realigned the US government with European positions, government sources said on Tuesday.
Monday's meeting in the White House, attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders, reversed the momentum of last week's summit in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the sources said.
It also resulted in Putin agreeing to participate in a bilateral meeting with Zelensky during a telephone call with Trump, they added, further testing how serious Russia is about peace negotiations.
The sources said the German government was clear that it plans to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine after a peace treaty, but stressed that a decision on its exact contribution would only be made once the broad framework of the guarantees had been clarified.
There was reportedly agreement among the European leaders in Washington that the security guarantees would have to be comprehensive, spanning issues of military security, Ukraine's armament and monitoring, as well as political support for the country.
