(WHTM)– A Pennsylvania lawmaker is proposing legislation that would ban drones on or over school grounds.

State Rep. Brenda Pugh (R-120) says she plans to introduce legislation that would prohibit the flying of drones over school grounds, with the exception for law enforcement officers and school security personnel.

“We have seen vast improvements in technology over the past several years, including advances in drone technology. While technological improvements are important for our state, we need to ensure that proper regulations are put into place to prevent any misuse,” the memo says.

In the memo, Pugh argues that Pennsylvania should impose restrictions on this technology as part of an effort to protect students.

Drones are often equipped with cameras or have the ability to drop things from the sky. Both could potentially cause harm to students.

There would also be exceptions for individuals who obtain permission from their school’s board of directors, according to the memo.

This document has not yet been submitted for introduction.

Drones are legal in Pennsylvania for recreational and commercial use, but they are encouraged to follow Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions.

According to the Cornerstone Law Firm, it is illegal in Pennsylvania to use a drone to intentionally conduct surveillance of another person in a private place.
