Most People Don’t Want To Drive With Their Hands These Days

This is where we’re at as a society: more people want hands-free driving in their next car than any other feature. That’s right, our priorities are so screwed up people no longer fantasize about massaging seats, cooled center console compartments, or starlight headliners.

Instead, people want to take their hands off the steering wheel and let the car drive them. We can’t believe we’re surrounded by such miscreants.

But a new study from AutoPacific shows people want semi-autonomous driving capabilities in their next vehicle. A close second is rearward automatic emergency braking, we guess because rearview cameras and radar sensors with all their beeping just aren’t enough.

Third is a sunroof or moonroof. We guess enough people enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

What we want in our next car is a stick shift. We guess some of us like to actively be engaged in driving and the rest just want to check out and doom scroll Instagram or TikTok instead.

While we lament this overwhelming desire for hands-free driving systems in cars, it sadly might be for the best. After all, people really suck at driving lately and it’s often because of driver distraction.

We see this all the time: someone’s so into their car’s touchscreen or their phone they can’t be bothered to look at the road, let alone stay in their own lane. The screen addiction is real and if some of these drivers were younger, we’d conclude they were iPad kids, they’re so attached to their devices.

It gets tiresome dealing with that and drivers who can’t figure out which lane they’re supposed to turn into, etc. Perhaps having the vehicles drive themselves, at least for the members of society who are so checked out they don’t want to do all that work, is for the best.

Then the rest of us can actually enjoy driving on public roads again instead of dodging some idiot watching Netflix.
