Is Wawa rival Sheetz pushing into Southeastern Pennsylvania?

Could convenience store Sheetz, dominant in central and western Pennsylvania, dare to push into Wawa territory?

Already approaching Bucks County from the north with a handful of Lehigh County spots, the Altoona-based convenience chain, beloved for its touchscreen-order burgers, fries and “MTO” snacks, is redeveloping a shuttered Rite Aid in Downingtown, Chester County.

The planned 6,100-square-foot store will feature a drive-thru, indoor seating, 45 parking spaces and a dozen multi-fuel gas pumps. Located at the busy intersection of East Lincoln Highway and Bondsville Road, the site sits diagonally across from a Wawa, setting up yet another face-off between the two regional rivals.

Sheetz has been expanding east from its western Pennsylvania roots, but it has largely avoided Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery and Delaware counties, long considered solid Wawa territory. Wawa is of course headquartered in Wawa, Pa., in Delaware County.

The Downingtown location marks another step into that turf, continuing a pattern already seen in Lancaster, Berks and Lehigh counties.
