A 21-year-old University of Oregon student died Aug. 18 after suffering multiple broken bones and a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a car while riding a bike on Aug. 8 at a crosswalk on Hilyard Street northeast of the intersection of E. Eighth Avenue.

Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa was riding a bike in the crosswalk at approximately 7:48 p.m. when she was hit by an Audi A4, according to the Eugene Police Department.

Bystanders performed CPR on Figueroa and she was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries by the Eugene Springfield Fire Department.

Melinda McLaughlin, spokesperson for the police department, said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

According to a GoFundMe page initially launched to aid in her recovery, Figueroa came to the U.S. from Mexico to follow her dream of becoming a lawyer.
