The iX3 is a new electric version of BMW’s popular X3 compact luxury SUV. The previous-generation X3 was sold as an EV called the iX3 in other markets, but this marks the first time this model will come to the United States. It also ushers in BMW’s “Neue Klasse” platform that will underpin many future models, including the upcoming electric 3-series sedan.

Why It Matters

The Neue Klasse components are a big deal for BMW, not only from a mechanical standpoint, but also because this represents a new era for BMW in terms of design and driving dynamics. The Neue Klasse concepts previewing the iX3 and 3-series got us excited about the taut new proportions of these new models that suggest athleticism, and we’re hoping that goes beneath the surface. The company is emphasizing the importance of the drive with the "Heart of Joy" branding it’s using for the "Superbrain" computers that control many functions. And our prototype drive of the iX3 revealed good handling characteristics.

Platform

The Neue Klasse underpinnings are meant to be used for EVs, hybrids, and gasoline models going forward. So while the iX3 EV will be the first vehicle on this architecture, it will surely be followed by many other models in the near future. While the iX3's overall length is similar to a gas-powered X3, the wheelbase has been stretched by several inches to create a roomier cabin.

Powertrain

A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup with around 400 horsepower is expected, although BMW hasn’t revealed details about power output or different configurations. A rear-wheel-drive configuration is unlikely for the U.S., as most EV SUV competitors come standard with all-wheel drive in the luxury segment. BMW says the all-wheel-drive model should be able to accelerate to 60 mph in under five seconds.

Range figures are expected to be high, with an EPA rating of around 400 miles possible. Fast-charging times should also be impressive thanks to the 800-volt battery pack, expected to have a total capacity of roughly 130 kWh. BMW is touting the ability to gain about 200 miles of range in 10 minutes with an 800-volt, 400-kW charger.

Competition

The iX3 will go up against other compact electric SUVs, such as the Audi Q6 e-tron, Lexus RZ, Porsche Macan Electric, and Genesis Electrified GV70. Mercedes is also set to unveil its own challenger soon, the GLC-class EV.

What Might Go Wrong

America’s charging network in its current form may not allow iX3 drivers to take full advantage of its fast-charging capabilities, since 800-volt, 400-kW chargers are uncommon in the United States. And some of the interior displays may end up being distracting, with BMW inserting a two-inch tall display running across the top of the dashboard at the base of the windshield in place of a traditional gauge cluster.

Estimated Arrival and Price

The iX3 will go on sale in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2026, and it’ll likely start at around $60,000. The iX3 will be revealed in September at the IAA Mobility show in Munich.
