MADISON, Conn. (WTNH) — While thousands of visitors come and go to Hammonasset State Park in Madison, there are some residents who stay even after the gates close at sundown.
At Meig’s Point Nature Center– located on the far south point of the park- visitors can get up close to meet hundreds of animals of different species who call Connecticut home.

“It’s sort of an immersive experience,” park ranger Russ Miller said. “You’ve got all the trees above you and all the animals to look at.”
From reptiles, fish, and birds of different kinds, the center has a handful of exhibits and open water observation tanks to see.
Greeting you at the front of the center are a pair of monk parakeets. Once an escaped pet, the birds have since adapted to cold New England winters and are now found in the wild across the state.

“People always think that they’re crazy when they see green parrots fly by, you’re not crazy, there are green parrots!” Miller said.
Another popular resident of the center their extremely orange lobster, thought to be a one in 30 million find.
With hands on presentations by staff and ever-changing educational programs, visitors Lucille McGann and Katalina O’Connor said it has kept them coming back every year.
“We did learn some pretty cool things,” McGann said. “I love seeing all of the turtles and snakes.”
