TSA bans new items in checked bags. Here's what to know when packing for a flight

The Transportation Security Administration just deemed more items too risky to pack in your checked luggage.

TSA is no longer allowing passengers to fly with certain cordless hair tools in the airplane's cargo hold. However, the tools can still fly in carry-on bags if they are stored safely, the administration says.

This comes soon after TSA banned power banks and portable chargers using lithium-ion batteries from flying in checked luggage.

TSA also began allowing passengers to keep their shoes on during security screenings this summer.

Here's what you should know before you pack your luggage for a flight.

Can you bring a curling iron in your carry-on?

It depends on whether it's corded or cordless, TSA says.

Corded curling irons can fly in both carry-on and checked luggage, according to the administration.

Cordless curling irons or flat irons powered by gas cartridges or butane are allowed in carry-on luggage, but not in checked luggage, according to TSA.

Passengers traveling with cordless hair tools should be aware that gas refills (spare cartridges) for curling irons or flat irons are not allowed in carry-ons or checked luggage.

For international flights, passengers should check with their airlines, as international regulations may differ from domestic rules, TSA says.

How do you pack a cordless curling iron in your carry-on?

Flyers must take safety precautions when traveling with these items, TSA says.

Only one cordless curling iron is allowed in each passenger's carry-on bag, according to the administration.

TSA states that a safety cover must be securely fitted over the heating element, and the curling iron must be protected from being turned on accidentally.

Why are cordless curling irons prohibited from checked luggage?

Federal Aviation Administration regulations state that gasoline and butane are not allowed in checked luggage, regardless of the product they power, FAA spokesman Donnell Evans said.

The TSA classifies both gasoline and butane as flammables and are not allowed in carry-on or checked baggage because of the fire risk.
