Murky Mystery: SN95 Mustang Recovered From Michigan Lake

Back in the 1990s someone was enjoying this red SN95 Mustang convertible, but it was recently discovered submerged in a lake. As you can see, what was once a beautiful car is now covered in sludge and crud, the frame and many other key components likely corroding rapidly now they’re out of the watery grave.

Learn about the Rollswagen, a stretch limo version of the VW Beetle.

The recovery was made by Van Buren Township police from Belleville Lake in the metro Detroit area. As authorities astutely observed, the Ford “appears to have been underwater for several years.” It might have been there for well over a decade, maybe even two.

What this pony car encapsulates if a murky mystery, similar to other vehicles found submerged in bodies of water. Such hidden gems are always compelling for a litany of reasons.

In this case, cops ran the VIN right away. To the surprise of nobody, the SN95 Mustang returned as stolen. However, police are keeping a tight lip about when the theft was reported. Instead, they’re asking for members of the public to come forward with information.

Was the ‘Stang used to steal other rides? Did it act as a mobile narcotics distribution center? Was it used in some mobile target practice sessions? Any number of possibilities are out there.

Unfortunately, when criminals sink cars, it can be an effective way of washing off evidence which otherwise would offer a clue about what happened with the vehicle.

People, of course, have their own theories. One we hear constantly when a ride is found sunken into a lake or river is that it must be an insurance scam. That isn’t always the case, but sadly many times it turns out true as people don’t want to pay for a vehicle anymore and decide to report it stolen, sink it, then collect a check from the insurance company.

One thing’s for sure, this Mustang isn’t even salvageable, and that’s sad.
