It's An Online-Only Alternative To Dealerships
As one of the nation's largest rental-car firms, Hertz has a large inventory of used cars at any given time. Many of those cars are sold by the company's Hertz Car Sales division, which is now partnering with Amazon Autos to streamline the process.
Used cars from Hertz will now be available via Amazon, combining the former's inventory with the latter's online sales platform, Hertz announced Wednesday in a press release. Cars will initially be sold on Amazon Autos in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, but Hertz plans to expand the program to all 45 of its used-car sales locations.
Easier Used-Car Browsing

Amazon Autos already lists cars from traditional franchised dealerships, but will now add former Hertz rental cars as their own category. Shoppers can find them by searching "Hertz vehicles," which will bring up listings within 75 miles of a given location. The listings should have the same makeup as Hertz's current rental fleet, with brands like Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, and Toyota represented.
While they tend to be relatively new, used rental cars have often led a hard life, accumulating lots of miles in a short time with drivers who may not be as precious with the rental as they are with their own cars. Hertz says each used car it sells undergoes a 115-point inspection (that's in addition to post-rental inspections), and is backed by a 12-month/12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a seven-day/250-mile buyback guarantee, and 24/7 roadside assistance. The company also claims that many cars sell below their Kelley Blue Book value, so there might be bargains to be had.
Customers browsing listings on Amazon Autos can complete their purchases totally online, and only have to go to a physical Hertz Car Sales location to pick up their cars, according to Hertz.
Slow Rollout For Amazon Autos

Online retail giant Amazon's expansion into car sales has proceeded at a slow pace. After a collaboration with Hyundai to deliver cars to customers for short test drives, the two companies announced a sales collaboration in November 2023. That didn't get underway until late 2024, and earlier this year Amazon Autos announced that it would expand to other brands. Amazon now claims to have participating dealers in 130 U.S. cities.
The partnership with Hertz could be of interest particularly to shoppers looking for a used EV. Hertz has said that it's looking to clear at least 30,000 EVs from its fleet, and so far that's led to some impressive deals on cars like the Tesla Model 3. But even customers looking for a gasoline car could save some stress by shopping online and avoiding the hassle of traditional dealerships.
