Found yourself on the road as severe thunderstorms sweep in? Well, keep on going and don't hide under a bridge.

That's the message from state authorities after storms on Sunday brought heavy, pooling rain and large hail to parts of the Twin Cities.

Traffic cameras showed several locations where drivers had stopped underneath bridges, causing traffic to back up as a result. I-35W in Northeast Minneapolis was one such location where traffic was snarled.

Responding to Bring Me The News, the Minnesota State Patrol said it would encourage drivers not to seek protection from the elements by stopping beneath overpasses on major highways.

"The shoulder and stopping on the highway are for emergency reasons only, and could pose as additional risks when driving on the road," it said.

"If you are not comfortable driving in less than ideal situations, plan ahead before you go out."

Drivers who don't want to keep driving through severe weather are advised to "pull off to the next exit and into a parking lot if you can."

"Do not stop on the shoulders or ramps, unless it is an emergency," the State Patrol said, warning that non-emergency stopping could result in a ticket.
