The beleaguered technology Louisiana has relied upon for driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations since the 1970s heyday of the Volkswagen Beetle is being junked and replaced with a newer, sleeker model, Gov. Jeff Landry announced Tuesday.

The state is upgrading its software for the Office of Motor Vehicles, allowing Louisiana to move on from the system it’s used for more than 50 years, according to the governor.

The new system from Champ, a Cleveland, Ohio-based software company, will provide drivers and vehicle owners with access to the state OMV online and through a smart device application.

The agreement between Louisiana and Champ will cost the state $30 million and give the company two years to complete its OMV upgrade, according to the governor’s office.

Louisiana joins the list of states where Champ, founded in 2018, provides services. West Virginia hired Champ in 2021 to handle its vehicle title and registration. In 2023, Kentucky brought in the company to handle its vehicle titles and liens, and New Jersey and Illinois have also reached contracts with the business since then.
