Daily blasting operations on the Watterson Expressway will begin Aug. 25, according to a news release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Intermittent rolling roadblocks, which are required to prepare the interstate for widening, will occur near the Interstate 264 and Interstate 71 interchange. The roadblocks could last up to 20 minutes once each day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
“Motorists should use caution, heed signage, and allow extra travel time during the scheduled rolling roadblocks,” officials said.
KYTC officials are encouraging motorists to sign up for email or text alerts to receive notifications of weekly traffic impacts of the project.
Officials said the blasting operations are part of the $130 million improvement project of I-264 and US Highway 42, or Brownsboro Road. The project is expected to be completed by Fall 2027.
The project will reconstruct the current interchange to a single-point urban interchange, which is “a grade-separated highway interchange where a single signalized intersection controls traffic flow,” officials said. The design will allow left-turning vehicles coming from opposite directions to turn at the same time, reducing the number of places where vehicles cross paths.
