Pueblo D60 school board candidate emphasizes addressing bullying, mental health

Lucretia Robinson looks to bring sound policy, communication and transparency to the Pueblo School District 60 Board of Education.

Robinson is one of seven candidates vying for two open seats on the board this November. She spent part of her 27-year career with the Department of Corrections, working with Colorado Bluesky Enterprises — an organization providing services to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Her first job was with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. She also has served as a Girls Scout Troop Leader.

While Robinson has run for Pueblo City Council multiple times, this is her first time running for the Board of Education in Pueblo D60 — a school district in which she has grandchildren.

"I am running because that is my passion," Robinson said of her 2025 campaign for school board. "I have been working with children for a very long time."

During an Aug. 15 "Date with a Candidate" event hosted by the Pueblo County Democratic Party, Robinson told attendees that children attending Pueblo D60 schools face a variety of challenges. Some deal with bullying. Others may struggle with questions about who they are. Some students come from broken homes, she said.

"We need to engage and we need to talk," Robinson said. "We need to share some of those struggles that kids are having."

Robinson also expressed support for increasing the number of vocational training programs and the number of mental health professionals in Pueblo D60 schools.

"We need to have mental health counselors in schools, just like we do our nurses, because our teachers are there to educate. They are not there to discipline. I think that is where we get all mixed up. A kid comes in, they are bullied. The teacher is wanting to help, but you are taking away from what they are supposed to be doing because they are trying to deal with something else," she said.

If elected, Robinson seeks to engage stakeholders throughout the district, including fellow board members, educators, parents, grandparents and other community members to create "growth opportunities" for children throughout the district.

"The biggest, biggest thing is that we provide the services for our kids... that is our priority and we need to have their voices heard," she told the Chieftain.

The two seats open on the Pueblo D60 board this November are currently occupied by Brian Cisneros and Kathy DeNiro. Both Cisneros and DeNiro have filed to run for reelection, according to Colorado Transparency in Contribution and Expenditure Reporting (TRACER).

Rae Carnevale, Fred Galves, Tommy Farrell and Daniel McHenry also are filed to run in November.
