FAIRFIELD, Iowa — A man accused of taking an Iowa teen reported missing to a North Carolina home last weekend is now facing a kidnapping charge in Iowa.

Last weekend, the Fairfield Police Department shared a post on Facebook about a 15-year-old girl who had been reported missing. Not long after the post was published, the teen was found over 15 hours away at a home in North Carolina.

Fairfield police contacted the Rockingham County, North Carolina Sheriff’s Office about the missing teen and the belief that she might be in their jurisdiction. According to officials, the investigation into the teen’s disappearance discovered that the teen and a North Carolina man had been communicating on texting apps, and that the man picked up the teen in Fairfield before taking her to North Carolina.

The investigation led deputies to a residence in Reidsville, where they found the teen safe. The teen was reunited with her family.

Authorities say the man who took the teen was 25-year-old John Michael Johnson. He was booked into the Rockingham County Jail earlier this week on North Carolina charges of felony second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and felony solicitation by computer.

On Thursday, the Fairfield Police Department announced Johnson would also be facing charges in Iowa. A warrant for his arrest was issued for first-degree kidnapping. Johnson will remain in North Carolina until arrangements are made to move him to Jefferson County, Iowa, to be officially charged.
