
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Guatemalan national who was living in West Springfield was sentenced for possession of a forged immigration document and reentering the U.S. illegally.
In a news release sent to 22News from the Department of Justice, 33-year-old Jose Martinez-Lopez was arrested on March 10th in West Springfield for assault and battery on a police officer. In his possession, he had a forged permanent resident card in the name of “Amalio Mendez-Molina.”

Following his arrest, Martinez-Lopez admitted that he re-entered the U.S. illegally in 2021. He was then taken into custody by immigration officials.
Martinez-Lopez previously reentered the U.S. unlawfully four times, was convicted in Arizona of human smuggling, charged in Illinois with domestic battery/bodily harm, and was twice charged with assault on a police officer in Massachusetts.

November 2022: Arrested in Cook County, Ill., for domestic battery/bodily harm.

In June 2025, Martinez-Lopez pleaded guilty to possession of a forged immigration document and unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He was sentenced in federal court in Springfield to time served (163 days in prison) and is now subject to deportation.
