HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (WGN) – Emergency crews are searching for a missing swimmer in Lake Michigan near Highland Park.

City officials said at around noon Saturday, emergency crews were sent to the area near Openlands Lakeshore Preserve in Fort Sheridan for reports of a swimmer struggling in the waters of Lake Michigan.

A bystander tried to help, but was unable to reach the swimmer due to the lake’s strong currents, according to investigators.

Officials said the Highland Park Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team has initiated rescue efforts, while the Highland Park Police Department launched a drone to help with the search.

Officials added a member of the dive team was briefly reported missing during the search, but was later found and uninjured.

First responders are continuing to search for the missing swimmer and members of the public are asked to avoid the area.
