NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman said she’s met a “lovely” guy — but his home is absolutely “filthy”

  • She said the house is “dirty, grimy and sticky” and that “there were dog hairs everywhere”

  • The woman asked for advice on a popular community forum — where commenters told her to run

A woman says she “really” likes the new man in her life — but she’s concerned about his “filthy” home.

The woman detailed her story on the “Am I Being ‘Unreasonable?’ forum on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet.com, a place where women can go to seek advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In her post, the woman said that the new guy she has been seeing is “lovely.”

“We really hit it off and have a lot in common. He treats me well and puts in a lot of effort,” she added.

However, the original poster (OP) — who admits that she has some “OCD tendencies” when it comes to cleanliness — said that she recently visited his home for the first time, and she was “gutted.”

“It was filthy. Picture dirty, grimy and sticky,” she said, adding that he has two dogs who are allowed on every item of furniture, so “there were dog hairs everywhere.”

“The bathrooms were especially awful,” she continued, noting that the smell of dog urine permeated much of the house.

“I kept my socks on while I was there, but he was walking around barefoot and his feet were black! The back garden was a mess too [...],” she continued.

The OP said that she is supposed to visit his home again soon, but the thought of it makes her “skin crawl.”

She said that he told her he is aware of the issue and is attempting to “sort it out,” but she’s unsure if he is truly serious about “tackling the mess.”

“WTF do I do?” she asked at the end of her post, adding, “I really like this guy, and aside from this one issue, he's great!”

The vast majority of commenters told the OP that they thought her new guy was exhibiting some major red flags — and that a relationship likely would not work out long term.

“You are not compatible. It is a massive issue,” one person said.

"Gross. You're not compatible. He’s not a project for you to fix. This is who he is. Dump him,” added someone else.

“This would be a dealbreaker for me. You sound incompatible, and that it would be extremely stressful,” said yet another person.

Another commenter said that his extreme lack of cleanliness may impact other parts of their relationship as well.

“You say 'aside from this one issue,' but I'd be very surprised if his laziness and very low standards don't surface in other areas of his life and personality, too.”
