(The Center Square) – On the first weekend after resumption of classes, students in Columbia at the University of South Carolina were sheltered in place Sunday evening.

A “Carolina Alert,” the campus warning system, at 7:10 p.m. said, “Urgent Carolina Alert: No evidence of an active shooter at this time. Police are searching. Please continue to shelter in place until there is an all clear.”

Published reports say the possible scene was at or near the Thomas Cooper Library.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded.

Classes began on Tuesday for the campus of more than 46,000 undergraduate students and 56,000 total students.
