KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Fire Department said it has responded to 10 calls for cars stuck in high water as heavy rains inundated some streets across the city early Friday morning.

Calls started coming into the fire department about 2:45 a.m.

The fire department said in each call, drivers and their passengers were able to remove themselves from the situation safely. No injuries have been reported.

Friday marked at least the third time in a little more than a week that the Kansas City area has been dealing with flash flooding.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill issued a flash flood warning just after 4 a.m. Friday for parts of Jackson, Clay, Cass and Ray counties in Missouri and parts of Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami counties in Kansas. The warning is set to expire at 8:30 a.m. The weather service estimates that between 2 and 4.5 inches of rain has fallen so far.

Emergency management and law enforcement have reported water over the roads on Interstate 70 and 18th street, Interstate 435 before 23rd Street, and several roads in the city of Belton, according to the weather service.

The Kanas City Fire Department offered the following tips for drivers:

  • Never drive into high water. It only takes a few inches of moving water to sweep a vehicle downstream.

  • Never walk in high water. Sewer covers easily become dislodged in this case and it will be deadly if you fall into one.

  • If the water level is higher than the tailpipe of your vehicle, your vehicle will stall.

  • If you encounter high water on the road, find an alternate route.
