Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Police in Maine are asking members of the public to report any sightings of a large tegu lizard spotted wandering loose in Old Town.

The Old Town Police Department said on social media that the reptile, initially thought to be a monitor lizard, was seen in the Hillside Avenue area Sunday evening.

"Tegus have sharp teeth and claws, and strong jaws," the post said. "While not inherently aggressive, they can lash out if they feel threatened."

Police asked anyone who spots the loose lizard to report its location to the department and not attempt to approach or capture it.

The lizard's origins are unknown, and police are asking the animal's owner to contact officers.
